In The Four Directions, we work with the archetypes of the Warrior, Healer, Visionary and Teacher. Each archetype corresponds to a cardinal direction. Each direction contains a set of practices synthesized from worldwide shamanic traditions.
Nature Vigil is an ancient, cross-cultural practice associated with the East, The Way of the Visionary. For almost thirty years, we have offered an opportunity to spend time on the land – to fast, learn, meditate, pray and envision a path with heart and meaning.
Many of you have expressed to me how transformational this experience has been in your life. In 2024, we are excited to offer a 7-day program that incorporates learning sessions and a Nature Vigil experience.
The program includes 7 days and 6 nights of supervised camping on the land at Four Springs Retreat – a sacred sanctuary recognized around the world as an inspirational setting for reflection, study and personal transformation.
Our experienced staff has supported over 10,000 people – many of whom have never camped overnight – to have a safe, deep and meaningful time on the land. A modified Nature Vigil that takes place in a retreat room is also available for those not able to camp on the land. (Space for Modified Nature Vigil is limited.)
We hope that you will join us for this transformational experience devoted to vision and our life dream.
Program Fee: US $1,700
Space is limited

The heart is held as the key to psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual health and well-being. Love, located at the center of the heart, is considered the most potent of all the healing salves.
In the Basque tradition, and elsewhere, the condition of the heart is critical to giving and receiving love, and having healthy relationships with self, family, community, and the Earth.
The heart is viewed as an organ of vision and the true source of humanity. Heart work is a daily practice that keeps human beings available to the energy of love.
Anatomically, the heart has four chambers. In the Healer’s Way, each chamber has a specific function:
The Full Heart is the home of full engagement, reliability, commitment, and responsibility.
The Strong Heart is the source of courage, the authentic self, and the capacity to take a stand.
The Open Heart is where acceptance, receptivity and reciprocity resides.
The Clear Heart helps us to be wise, trusting and discerning in our choices.
Unresolved inner and outer conflicts set the heart to its default settings. Fear and pride are the major sources of conflict.
Half-heartedness is caused by burdens and obligations. To restore the Full Heart, we must recommit, renegotiate, or retire obligations that are no longer life-giving.
Weak heartedness results from the fear of being in our own power and telling our truth. We have “swallowed our tongue” rather than given voice to what is true for us. Facing and addressing our fears remedies this condition.
Closed heartedness signals where we have unresolved anger and resentment. Resignation and cynicism are also symptomatic of the choice to close the heart and the mind. The remedy is to face conflict and seek resolution with a commitment to do no harm. Practicing forgiveness also reopens the heart.
The Doubting Heart is connected to fear of making a mistake, feeling not good enough, and mistrusting ourselves and others. The remedy is strengthening self-trust through affirmation and recognition of the power of our inner resources and the positive choices we have made.
We do not see or hear clearly when the state of the heart is half, weak, closed or confused. These distortions give rise to myriad psychological and sociological conditions: low self-esteem, narcissism, loneliness, prejudice, separation, aggression, and nihilism to name a few. It is easy to conclude that the default states of the heart are human nature. They are, in fact, a result of a spiritual disease that affects the heart and distorts our thoughts and behaviours.
With the heart in such distressed states, optimal health for individuals, families and communities is elusive. Instead, the social disorders we face every day accelerate, leading to serious malaise and spiritual decline.
The Four Chambered Heart program includes specific practices for strengthening, opening, softening, and deepening the heart to correct these dysfunctions so that we can focus on what has heart and meaning in our lives and in our world.
Fee: $350 US

Mentor, Steward, Sage, Legacy Maker - The Four Stages of Eldership provides a time-honored framework for personal growth, contribution to society, and passing on wisdom and knowledge to future generations for the sustainability and empowerment of families and communities.
Eldership is a stage beyond the hero’s journey, which typically focuses on an individual quest and transformation.
The journey of Eldership emphasizes wisdom, guidance, and legacy. Elders pass on knowledge and experience to younger generations. This is a pivotal family and community contribution – the evergreen values, teachings, stories, songs, and traditions are shared as a rich tapestry of meaning and belonging.
Sadly, in much of western culture, elders are depicted poorly. Elders are often shown as incompetent and senile; a burden to their families and society; stubborn, inflexible and resistant to change; and irrelevant.
These stereotypes can contribute to ageism and negatively impact how elders are perceived and depicted in society.
The archetypes of Mentor, Steward, Sage and Legacy Maker help shapeshift the cultural confusion about the value and contribution of Elders.
Here's why these roles are significant:
Mentorship: This stage allows individuals to pass on their knowledge and experience, ensuring that valuable insights are not lost but are instead shared with younger generations. It fosters a sense of fulfillment and purpose in helping others navigate their own paths.
Stewardship: By taking on the role of caretaker for traditions and values, elders ensure the preservation of cultural heritage and societal wisdom. This stage allows for the continuation of community values and a sense of belonging and identity.
Sagehood: Reflecting on life experiences and distilling them into wisdom adds depth to one's own understanding and allows for the sharing of profound insights with others. It promotes introspection and contemplation, leading to personal growth and spiritual fulfillment.
Legacy Maker: In the final years, preparing for the end of life by securing one's legacy ensures that the contributions and memories of a lifetime are not forgotten. Passing on final lessons and engaging in rituals helps solidify one's impact on future generations
The Four Stages of Eldership program offers a profound and meaningful journey towards personal growth, community contribution, and the preservation of wisdom for future generations. As mentors, stewards, sages, and legacy makers, elders play a vital role in the continuity of values, traditions, and knowledge that enrich the fabric of families and communities.
Embracing these stages fosters a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and legacy that transcends individual achievements, embodying the essence of a life well-lived and shared for the betterment of all.
Let us honor and celebrate the wisdom of Eldership as we navigate these stages, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and enduring impact for generations to come.
Fee: $425 US if you register before Sept. 15, 2024 and $495 US after Sept. 15, 2024
